Say hello to 2017’s Gas Safety Week, designed to remind, inform and motivate everyone to stay gas safe in their homes! Recently we shared an article on Facebook, claiming that up to 12 million homes in the UK are without a carbon monoxide alarm – pretty ‘alarming’ stuff!
In the name of safety and peace of mind, here are a few Gas Safety tips to keep you and your family happy and protected in your home:
Fit a carbon monoxide alarm
Of course, given what we recently discovered, we strongly recommend you fit an audible carbon monoxide alarm in your home, which will sound in the case of any presence in the air. This is vital as carbon monoxide carries with it no look, smell or taste – meanings it’s undetectable to us alone and potentially deadly. Keep your home safe!
Know the signs
Although carbon monoxide carries with it little detectable signs, there are symptoms in us that we can experience and recognise as carbon monoxide poisoning. Detecting these in time could make a crucial difference. If you experience headaches, dizziness, breathlessness, nausea, collapse and loss of consciousness, you could be experiencing carbon monoxide poisoning, and should seek help.
Only use Gas Safe registered companies
By choosing Gas Safe companies, you are getting a guaranteed third-party certified level of qualification to ensure safety and knowledge of the people you put your trust in! Without Gas Safe certification, there is no guarantee of this, and you leave your home vulnerable to unsafe installation, repairs and services. When you get your gas hardware maintained with us, you’re guaranteed a Gas Safe service.
Keep your appliances serviced
Servicing of your gas boiler will ensure its safety, efficiency and can often highlight small issues that can escalate if left untreated. It’s easy to underestimate the importance of servicing, but when it comes to the safety of your home, why take any chances? Plus, it can save you pennies in the longer term (read why, here)
Between services, stay vigilant for obvious warning signs
If your gas appliances show any signs of not working correctly (Gas Safety Register list a few as lazy yellow flames instead of crisp blue ones, black marks or stains on or around the appliance and too much condensation in the room), make a note and call a Gas Safe engineer when possible.
Staying Gas Safe isn’t rocket science, in fact it’s really very simple. Know the signs to look out for, stay vigilant, and keep your home safe by always using Gas Safe engineers!
